BERGER LEGINTHOV
WINERY

|
“What’s this rather strange name all about?” you may wonder. Well, two names, two explanations.
The name BERGER is simply the surname of our family.
For the name LEGINTHOV we would like to take you on a little journey back in time.
About 800 years ago, Cistercian monks lived in the region of “Mönchhof” (Monk’s Farmhouse), as the village is called today. They had settled there and cultivated land that had originally been mainly marshland. In 1217, King Andrew II of Hungary bestowed on them the whole area that up to then had been known as Petschenegengut Leginthov. This was a milestone in the development of the village. Winemaking became extremely important. Furthermore, the deed of donation from 1217 was the first documentary evidence of Mönchhof.
So, to cut a long story short, Leginthov was the first name of the municipality of Mönchhof, and Berger Leginthov, therefore, means something like Berger Mönchhof.
