Mönchhof
Mönchhof has approx. 2600 inhabitants and is situated 128m above sea level in the northern part of Burgenland - Austria’s easternmost federal state which borders on Hungary. It is located on the eastern shores of Lake Neusiedl and belongs to the viticultural region of the same name. The area around Mönchhof is characterized by the Pannonian lowlands interspersed with a few rolling foothills of the Leithagebirge chain of hills.
The Viticultural Region of Lake Neusiedl
The viticultural region of Lake Neusiedl stretches over the eastern shores of the Lake and coincides with the district of Neusiedl am See. With a wine-growing area of approx. 8,300 ha it is the biggest of four viticultural regions in Burgenland. The main grape variety grown is Zweigelt, followed by Welschriesling.
The landscape of Northern Burgenland is shaped by Lake Neusiedl, Central Europe’s biggest steppe lake. With a surface area of 320 km² this lake is remarkably large, but nowhere deeper than 1.5m on average. These circumstances allow the lake to store the warm temperatures during the day, and release them onto the surrounding areas overnight.
Lake Neusiedl forms a sort of climatic regulator that creates a microclimate in the whole region. This microclimate makes grapes ripen earlier than in other parts of the country, and it also favours the “botrytis cinerea” fungus, the noble rot - an absolute must for the production of sweet wines with a high level of natural sugar.
